Laying instructions

1. AS A FLOOR COVERING

Cutting and joining

This type of material may fray easily when being cut to length, owing to its rustic and rich structure. In order to make them easier to lay, our products are sold in roll form with 2 selvages as standard. In that respect, pay particular attention to the following points:

  • wherever possible, the woven hems should be flush with the next strip (to produce a perfect butt joint);
  • if a selvage isn't perfectly straight, cut the edges in those places using a pair of scissors, thereby loosening one shoot and adjusting both hems;
  • always join strips in the same fibre direction;
  • wherever there's a risk of fraying, use a skirting for a neat finish.

Glueing

The choice of the right glue, for meticulous placement, is crucial to the durability and resistance of the covering. The use of a reputable proprietary brand of polyacrylic glue with a high spreading rate is recommended. It should be applied, preferably, using the serrated spatula no 3.

Take the following requirements into consideration as well:

  • Quantity required 500 g/m2
  • Wait before placement approx. 10 to 20 min.
  • Laying time (thorough glueing) 30 to 40 min.
  • Time left to stand approx. 24 hours
  • Final bonding together after 72 hours

The adherence will depend on the conditions of the floor surface. The latter should be:

  • dry, clean and smooth
  • non-friable and without any crevices.

Placement

  • Always glue the entire bottom surface of the carpet.
  • To ensure a perfect adherence of the floor covering, press down firmly.
  • Don't load the floor covering before the bonding is complete (= after 72 hours).
  • Don't force the drying process.

After-care

After a while, the carpet may exhibit certain defects or imperfections. Air bubbles may form as a result of insufficient adherence due to shoddy laying. These defects can be corrected by injecting a little glue through the loosened patch of carpet using a syringe and then smoothing out the carpet in order to distribute the glue evenly.

Provided your carpet has been laid while duly observing all the above instructions, periodic maintenance will keep your carpet in good condition for a long time (see maintenance instructions).

2. AS A WALL COVERING

Cutting and joining

The aesthetic aspect of the joins plays a key part when hanging wall coverings.
Heed the following directions as well:

  • When joining the strips, take account not only of the pattern but of the fabric as well.
  • Always allow for wastage (+ 2 %) in the measured height of the strips.
  • If the wall is out of square, hang the first strip along a line drawn at 5 cm from the edge using a plumb line. This strip must be positioned accurately. Only then may the rest of the room be hung (i.e. with each drop of paper truly square).
  • Take special care of the butt joints when laying each strip against the last.
  • The shoots (viz. the weft yarn) should be joined as far as possible.

Minor corrections will be possible by applying more (or less) pressure on the strips.

Pasting

You are advised to use a reputable proprietary brand of polyacrylic paste with a high spreading rate.

Tools necessary for placement:

  • graduated ruler
  • stanley knife
  • rubber hammer
  • serrated spatula no 3.

Proceed as follows:

  • Start pasting the wall for the first strip, bearing in mind the paste manufacturer's instructions with reference to the maximum time the paste may be exposed to the open air as well as to the quantity to be used.
  • Cut the upper part along a shoot. Affix the strip so that it's flush with the edge of the ceiling. Make sure that the bottom edge of the strip is flush with the skirting. Trim if necessary.
  • Butt join the next length and continue in the same way (round the room). Slide each length with your fingertips to align the pattern. Start with a new strip at each re-entrant angle.
  • Smooth out carefully.

Special recommendations

  • First of all remove all wall sockets, electrical switches and skirtings.
  • Cover the salient angles with a single piece, without any joints. In this particular case, we advise you to use a contact adhesive.
  • In order to improve the quality of the placement, we advise you to apply a contact adhesive to the selvages of the strips over a band width of about 10 cm from the edge.
  • Should you place the covering on the ceiling, apply a contact adhesive to the entire surface.
  • If you need to cut a strip heightwise, do so between two adjacent warp threads.

After- care

After a while, the carpet may exhibit certain defects or imperfections. Air bubbles may form as a result of insufficient adherence due to shoddy laying. These defects can be corrected by injecting a little glue through the loosened patch of carpet using a syringe and then smoothing out the carpet in order to distribute the glue evenly.
